Last week, the Shiplake College community came together in an inspiring show of generosity, compassion and global citizenship as pupils, parents and staff raised funds to support a group of young Ukrainian visitors who will be hosted by the College over the Easter holidays.
In a deeply moving assembly on Monday, Headmaster Mr Howe shared with pupils the story behind this initiative. Over Easter, Shiplake will welcome a small group of Ukrainian pupils—ranging from late primary to junior secondary school age—who will be travelling from Kyiv. Their visit has been made possible through the remarkable efforts of South African cricket coach, Kobus Olivier, who has continued to coach and mentor young people in Ukraine despite the challenges and trauma of the ongoing conflict.
During their stay, the College will be providing accommodation, transport and a programme of activities, including cricket coaching. To support this cause, pupils and staff took part in a non‑uniform day on Thursday 12 February, with pupils donating £2. Alongside this, several fundraising activities helped boost the total:
- Bake Sale: £330.96 raised
- Burr Building Raffle: £177.74 raised
- Additional Parent and Staff Donations: Still being counted
Although the final amount is yet to be confirmed, the College is delighted to share that the fundraising target has already been exceeded thanks to the extraordinary kindness of the Shiplake community.
During Monday’s Whole School Assembly, pupils heard from Kobus Olivier through a recorded conversation. In it, he offered a frank and sobering insight into life in Kyiv, the daily challenges faced by young people, and the profound impact this Easter trip will have on those able to join. Parents were invited to watch the film and discuss it with their children as a reminder of the many privileges we often take for granted—privileges that come with the responsibility to support others where we can. The video is available to watch below.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated, supported or took part. Your collective efforts will make a meaningful difference to young lives shaped by unimaginable hardship. This fundraiser reflects the very best of Shiplake, demonstrating empathy, gratitude, and making the most of every opportunity to help others.
