On 25 July Year 12 pupil Matt Godwin will set off from the source of the River Thames, in Gloucestershire. Matt is aiming to run seven marathons in seven days, and will complete his epic journey, from the source of the Thames to the Thames Barrier, on 31 July. During this time, Matt will cover an unbelievable 184 miles. And the reason for this demanding challenge? To raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity, a charity about which Matt feels very passionate.
Matt, 18, is currently studying for his A Levels. A keen runner already, Matt has covered the 26.2 mile marathon journey a couple of times – although, as he wasn’t old enough to enter into a marathon, this was only ever just for his own enjoyment! Now, Matt is eager to take his hobby and do something supportive for the wider community. His training isn’t going brilliantly just yet; ‘I’m training for the National Schools’ Regatta currently so I can’t get heavily into running as I’m really focused on rowing.’ Matt commented that the Great Ormond Street Hospital ‘means a lot to me. Every child deserves a healthy and happy life, and if I can do something to help them achieve that, then I’ll absolutely do it.’ Matt is aware that, despite his running as a hobby already, this journey will not be an easy one! ‘I know it’ll be difficult but I have a real belief in helping GOSH. I’ll be running alone, although my parents are acting as my support vehicle and I will see them each evening when I stop at my destination. If I need anything in the middle of the day, I do have the option of phoning them – but I’m hoping I won’t need to!’
Matt has set himself the (hopefully achievable) target of raising £1000, and is very appreciative of any support. He will be running right along past the College on the fifth day of his journey, and will be keeping everyone up-to-date with a live Snapchat stream. He is also keen for anyone willing to join him – even if it just for a small stretch of the run. ‘If anyone feels like joining in, and running a section of the challenge with me, please let me know! It doesn’t have to be for the full day; if you fancy a 10k or a 5k that would be brilliant. Every bit of support means a lot!’ Please email Matt if you are interested in running with him here.
