College House has successfully completed its ambitious 24-hour Row-a-Thon, raising funds for the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice and supporting the Ocean Oarsmen as they prepare for their 3,000-mile Atlantic challenge.
The event began at 12.30pm on Friday 28 November, with the goal of keeping the rowing machine in motion for a full 24 hours. Thanks to phenomenal efforts from the College House boys, staff, and a few Gilson girls, the challenge was met with enthusiasm and determination. Many students put in mammoth shifts to ensure the machine never stopped, showcasing teamwork and resilience throughout. The aim of the Row-a-Thon was to collectively row the length of the River Thames – approximately 346,000 metres – within 24 hours. This ambitious target added an extra layer of motivation and excitement to the challenge
What’s more, the fundraising target of £750 was not only met but completely surpassed. With Gift Aid included, donations currently stand at an incredible £2,208.75 – and the total continues to rise. This achievement reflects the generosity of the Shiplake community and the commitment of everyone involved.
The Row-a-Thon was inspired by the Ocean Oarsmen, whose extraordinary Atlantic odyssey highlights the importance of perseverance and charitable giving. Funds raised will go to the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice, which provides vital care and support to life-limited children and their families.
A huge thank you to all who donated and supported the event. If you haven’t yet contributed and would like to help us push the total even higher, please visit our JustGiving page. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference.
