Exemplum Docet Awards
At the start of this half term 34 College students submitted entries (one third of which from non-scholars) for the inaugural Exemplum Docet Prize, all of a high quality and from the whole age range of students.
Entries ranged from classical research essays to works of art, from video lectures to dramatic monologues.
Mr Woolner judged all entries on their academic merit in response to a stimulus item, the effort put in, and the presentation skills demonstrated. He grouped them into Junior, Intermediate and Senior Awards, with an overall winner being selected from these.
Junior Award
Honourable mentions to Jonathan Kowal (Year 9) for a Spanish poem titled The Virus Wasn't There Either and Matthew Perry (Year 7) for a slide show presentation considering the merits of knowledge over creativity. The overall winner was James Bizior (Year 9), who submitted a tremendously well-researched topical slide show on Marginalisation, Equality, and Opportunity. His winning submission will be made into a video lecture and presented on the College website.
Intermediate Award
Honourable mentions go to B Zacharias (Year 10) and Freddie Shorten (Year 11), both for long-form essays which were immensely well-informed, academically weighty, and superbly written. They faced stiff competition in this category from the winning submission of Noah Scotchbrook for his research into, redrafting, and performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's I have a little list from The Mikado. The recording of this will also go up on the website for viewing.
Senior Award
Honourable mentions to Alex Rowe (Year 12) for his large-scale portrait of his grandfather in considering the question 'do we ever learn the lessons of history' and to Abi McCarthy (Year 12) for her her eloquently written, passionately delivered, and powerful video essay on the doors she faces as a woman in the twenty-first century. These were just pipped to the post by next year's Joint Head of College Jai Angell (Year 12), for his scholarly defence of capitalism as mankind's greatest invention in a long-form essay format. Jai's submission, as well as all of those of the runners-up will be available to see on the Scholars' Website shortly.
However there can be only one overall winner, who will receive the prize at Prize Giving. This year, for the creativity, academic ambition, and determination demonstrated in his hugely impressive submission, the inaugural Exemplum Docet Prize is awarded to Noah Scotchbrook.
Well done to all award winners this year!
