On Monday 8 December, Year 7 and 8 Art Scholars, joined by a group of dedicated and hardworking students, took part in an inspiring felting workshop that brought their classroom learning to life.

Drawing influence from the celebrated artists William Turner and Richard Pikesley, participants explored the theme of seascapes through a tactile and creative process. Using vibrant fibres and a range of textile techniques, students designed and crafted their own felted interpretations of coastal scenes.

Rebecca Bennet who ran the workshop said “The children completely took on board what they were doing and were really inspired by the artists. They really captured the atmosphere within their own artwork and were very successful in doing so.”

Year 7 students shared their thoughts on the workshop: “It was entertaining and a fun experience.” – C. Buckley. “Interesting and quite challenging.” – E. Banwell. “I’d definitely have a go again.” – D. Richards. “It feels like at the beginning it doesn’t look like much and then it all comes together.” – P. Crauford

The two hour workshop offered a unique opportunity to experiment with colour blending, composition, and texture, while encouraging confidence in working with new materials. This hands-on experience directly complemented their current studies on seascapes, allowing pupils to translate theory into practice in an imaginative and engaging way.

The Art Department was thrilled with the exceptional standard of work produced. Each piece reflected not only technical skill but also individuality and creativity. “We are incredibly proud of the students’ achievements,” commented Mrs Platt. “Their enthusiasm and willingness to experiment have resulted in some truly stunning outcomes.”
