Last Thursday, 5 March, the Art Department was buzzing with creativity as we welcomed wire artist James Ort for an inspiring, full‑day workshop with our Year 10 GCSE Art students. The visit introduced pupils to wire sculpture—a medium James describes as “drawing in the air”—and encouraged them to experiment with three‑dimensional form as they begin thinking ahead to their final GCSE pieces next year.

James opened the day by sharing his experiences as a practising artist and teacher, discussing his work at The Phoenix Studio in Thame and his travels delivering workshops around the world, most recently in Bali. His insight into life as an artist set the tone for an exciting and hands‑on creative experience.

In preparation for the workshop, students had each selected an animal or creature to study, researching and sketching ideas before bringing them to life in wire. The classroom quickly filled with energy (and plenty of pliers) as students crafted an impressive variety of sculptures, including sloths, octopuses, sharks, lizards, snakes, giraffes, tortoises, and even tarantulas.

James praised the group highly, describing them as “fearless, producing some of the most imaginative and enjoyable pieces I have seen yet.” The ambition and individuality reflected in the final outcomes made this an especially successful year for the workshop.

The Art Department extends a huge thank you to James for his time, expertise and enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing how this introduction to wire sculpture continues to shape and inspire our Year 10 students’ work over the coming months.
