The final whole school assembly of the academic year was held in the Prize Giving Marquee on the penultimate day of term and was an opportunity to recognise those pupils who have achieved academically, and in the arts and sport this year.
The Headmaster first welcomed all the pupils and staff by saying "Time is a very strange phenomenon in a school. Everything is broken down into chunks of time. We pack so much into a day, but blink and we're at the end of a week, the end of a half term, and yes, how on earth are we at the end of another academic year. Each year brings its own challenges and opportunities but I hope that when you look back on your year that you feel you've made progress, that you're in a better place, that you have learned things about yourself and that you have developed as a person. This is the first normal summer term since the summer term of 2019 - most of you weren't here for that. So for you, like me, this has been a term of firsts where we have done lots of things for the first time here at the College... As ever, the feeling of satisfaction as you sit here is a direct correlation of how much effort you have put into this academic year. And so many of you have put your hands up for things and got involved across lots of different areas of school life - I commend you and that is the Shiplake Way. And we have done that together as a school community."
Mr Howe went on to give a particular well done to those who have taken exams this year and setting a good example for those who will have exams next year. He added that we finish off the term and year with Shiplake being spoken about in the most glowing terms. "Shiplake is being talked about, it is on the map, and the reason for this is because of what we do and because of the people who are sitting here." He gave examples of comments received by members of the public giving feedback on how well-behaved, how delightful, how civilised, how friendly and warm the pupils they have met are.
He went on to refer to the recent inspection and commented: "It's wonderful to hold a piece of paper that gives us a rubber stamp that says we work at, and you attend, an excellent school. And not just an excellent school but an excellent school in all areas. And that is something that every single person here can be immensely proud of. The people here, your teachers, we cannot do this on our own. You make this school excellent, by putting your hands up for things, by volunteering, by getting involved, by taking deep breaths and sometimes doing things you may not naturally or necessarily want to do."
