In our final Sports Report of this academic year, we report on the tennis open finals and the brilliant girls v staff cricket match.

Tennis - Open Finals

This Saturday was the finals day of the inaugural Shiplake Open Tennis Tournament. Every member of the College community was eligible to enter, and we had a good showing throughout the draw of pupils and staff. The finals day consisted of 3 events: the singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The junior singles were played earlier in the week owing the clashes with the Lower School trip and was won by Zac Fisher in Year 8. With few girls competing in the tournament the draw included a lady's quarter which was won by Siena DiCuffa in Year 12. The first finals were the mixed doubles which was one in a hotly contested match by Jed Blacknell and Annabelle Townsend who beat ladies champion Siena DiCuffa and partner and doubles veteran Louis Poundall 6-2, 6-4. The gentleman’s singles pitted Jed Blacknell (undefeated in tennis this year) against our own Head of Tennis, Mr Shaw. Despite a late comeback from a run ragged Mr Shaw, Jed Blacknell won a well-deserved victory 6-2, 6-4. The Final match was between top Year 9 doubles pairing Joe Lamburn (singles semi-finalist) and Bertie Demery and Bonci Varady and Mixed doubles finalist, Louis Poundall. Louis and Bonci raced ahead to a 4-1 lead before the match was levelled was some great play at 4-4. Louis and Bonci buttoned down the hatches however and secured the set 6-4 before racing through to the win with a 6-1 second set. It was a fun filled afternoon of Pimm’s and top-notch tennis, culminating in a parent pupil tournament with the Blacknells’ taking the win.
