Today, Year 10 Art pupils were treated to a day-long wire workshop with artist James Ort.

James Ort is a local sculptor who works with clay, wire, paint and mixed-media. He is based at the Phoenix Gallery near Thame, where he offers sculpting, wire and painting workshops for adults and youngsters.

On his second visit to the College, James led a workshop with our Year 10 art pupils. The morning started with an introduction to the materials they would be using; wire, a wooden block for a base, and cable ties to keep it together before completion. Among the creations were Tom Sharp’s Elephant, Wallace Fisher’s Penguin, Toby Sale’s Frog and Louis Holland’s Giraffe, which are all fantastic!

Art Technician Mrs Brooks said ‘James is so fantastic with the pupils, and it’s great for them to see just how much can be achieved with a little patience and imagination!’

James last visited Shiplake College last February to hold a ceramics workshop with Year 10 artists. The pupils made fantastic animal sculptures out of clay, which were later glazed and fired in the on-site kiln.

Following the success of Miss Hallam’s staff ceramics course, James Ort will likely be in high demand amongst members of the Shiplake staff! We look forward to welcoming him back to share his knowledge and techniques with our pupils.
