Last week, Year 9 gathered in the Lecture Theatre for the hotly contested Year 9 Inter-House Debate.

Organised by Mr Player, the debate was about encouraging each house to research the subject matter in detail and put together a robust and convincing argument to state their case.

Two representatives from each house, Skipwith, Orchard, Everett, Burr and Welsh had 60 seconds to say whether they agreed or disagreed with the following statements and give their reasons backed up with evidence and fact: The Government is doing enough in the effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 and The Royal Family should be abolished.

Each house was then invited to challenge other members on the panel, and the audience members were invited to ask questions of specific house members.

The debate was closely fought out between the houses, but there was one that shone through - Welsh House - with an articulate D Thomas debating his points with confidence and providing excellent rebuttals to anyone who challenged his points.

Headmaster Mr Howe was so impressed with the debate, that he had this to say in assembly on Monday:

“Last week I watched the inaugural Year 9 Inter-House debating contest and we have unearthed a star in D Thomas who together with Dillon Higgins stormed to victory to claim the honour and the glory for Welsh House!

“Other notable performers were R Goggins of Orchard and Jonathan Kowal of Skipwith.

“Thank you to all of the contestants who did a fantastic job and the difficult and daunting task of public speaking on important topics.

“And, thank you to the audience as well. You took it really seriously, you asked really informed questions and I thought it was a terrific way to spend part of our lunchtime.

“Well done to everybody and thank you to Mr Player for organising the event.”
