On Friday 20 March, Gilson House students and staff came together to take on an inspiring physical challenge in support of women experiencing period poverty in the local area. With determination, teamwork and plenty of energy, Gilson set out to collectively walk and run 365 kilometres in a single day - a kilometre for every day of the year - and exceeded all expectations.
From early morning through to after school, Gilson Boarders were in near-constant motion. Activities took place across the school site, including timed laps of the Front Field, as well as supervised walks and runs off site. Distances were carefully logged using the Shiplake Strava Group, allowing staff to track progress and keep a live tally throughout the day. Gilson house showed remarkable resilience and commitment. Many students contributed multiple walks or runs, while staff provided supervision, encouragement, and logistical support across breakfast, lunchtime, activities and beyond.
Not only did the group reach their impressive target, they surpassed it, finishing the day on an outstanding 450 kilometres. Alongside the physical challenge, Gilson House has already raised over £1,700 through their JustGiving page, with donations still coming in. In addition to monetary fundraising, the House is also collecting sanitary product donations, which will continue throughout the remainder of the Spring Term. All funds and products raised are being donated to The Cowshed, a local charity based in Reading that supports vulnerable women and families in the surrounding community.
Gilson Housemistress Miss Liz Mattey reflected on the event on the day saying 'We have completed 430km, completely surpassing our original target, thanks to the help from staff, the rest of girls boarding and the total dedication of the Gilson girls! What a great day.'
The Gilson House fundraiser was a powerful example of the Shiplake community in action – combining a physical challenge with social awareness and team spirit. Congratulations go to all the students and staff involved for their hard work, generosity and determination to make a tangible difference.
