Politics Trips & Visits

On Tuesday 24 March, Shiplake College’s Year 12 A Level Politics students enjoyed a visit to Westminster, immersing themselves in the heart of British democracy with tours of both the Houses of Parliament and the UK Supreme Court.

The day began with a guided tour of Parliament, where students explored the famous chambers and stood beside the iconic green benches of the House of Commons. During the tour, they learned about the history, traditions and functions of the UK’s legislative process.  A particular highlight of the visit was the opportunity to meet our local MP, Freddie van Mierlo, who kindly joined the group in one of the historic Select Committee rooms. He spoke about life as an MP, his day‑to‑day responsibilities, and his recent appointment to a Select Committee. Students asked thoughtful questions and gained first‑hand insight into modern parliamentary politics.

The group then watched proceedings from the Public Gallery in the House of Commons, observing a lively and passionate debate in which Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, defended the Government’s policies on fossil fuels and energy. Seeing live parliamentary debate proved highly relevant to their studies. After lunch, students made their way to the Supreme Court, a topic they have recently begun studying in class. They were fortunate to sit in on a high‑profile case concerning money laundering, giving them a memorable glimpse of the UK’s judicial system in action.

The visit was a superb educational experience, deepening students’ understanding of both political and legal institutions while reinforcing key elements of their A Level curriculum. The class returned to Shiplake having learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed a memorable day in London.

Thank you to Mr Player and Mr Bosomworth for accompanying the visit and helping to make the day such a success.
