Over the Easter holidays, 38 Year 8 and Year 9 pupils embarked on four-day football tour to Lisbon, where they trained and competed at one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs, SL Benfica.
The trip began in the early hours of Friday morning, with students departing Shiplake at 6.30am for Gatwick Airport. Following a smooth journey, the group arrived in Lisbon and headed straight to the iconic Estádio da Luz, home of Benfica. The boys were immediately immersed in the Benfica experience with a high-quality training session led by academy coaches. Sessions were expertly structured, with specialist coaches working with players in their individual positions. This was followed by a behind-the-scenes stadium tour, including visits to the changing rooms, media areas, and even a walk through the players’ tunnel onto the pitch. After a busy first day, the group checked into their hotel before enjoying a relaxing evening walk along the nearby beach.
The second day saw all three Shiplake teams in action against local Portuguese opposition. The A team faced a strong academy side in a closely fought contest, while the B and C teams travelled by coach to their respective fixtures. Despite some challenging results, including a draw for the B team and hard-fought matches across the board, the experience of playing against skilled Portuguese players proved invaluable for development. In the afternoon, the boys swapped football boots for surfboards, taking part in a surfing session led by professional instructors. It was a highlight for many, providing a fun and refreshing way to recover after their matches.

Day three began with a visit to Benfica’s academy complex, located just outside Lisbon. The facility, which includes nine full-size pitches, a gym, and residential accommodation for academy players, gave the pupils an insight into life as a professional footballer. After another training session with Benfica coaches, the teams resumed their fixtures, with several closely contested games demonstrating the progress made over the course of the tour. The evening offered a chance to unwind, with a trip to a local arcade for bowling and games.
On the final day, the boys returned to the Benfica academy for a concluding training session, taking the opportunity to thank the coaches for their expertise and support. The tour finished with some sightseeing in Lisbon and a visit to the club shop, allowing pupils to pick up souvenirs and reflect on the trip.
The tour provided an exceptional opportunity for pupils to develop their football skills, experience a different footballing culture, and create lasting friendships and memories. The school extends its thanks to Mr Crisford, Mr Canning, Mr Ralph and Mr Meegan for organising and leading such a successful and inspiring trip.
