Trips & Visits Geography

A group of Year 10 pupils recently embarked on an unforgettable Geography trip to Sicily, experiencing first-hand the dramatic landscapes and natural processes studied in the classroom.

The journey began in the early hours, with pupils arriving at Shiplake at 3.00am before travelling to the airport for their flight to Catania. Upon arrival, the group took time to explore the local town and enjoy lunch, before heading to the spectacular Alcantara Gorge. There, pupils were treated to breathtaking views and had the opportunity to observe the formation of gorges and waterfalls up close, bringing textbook syllabus vividly to life.

The following day saw an early start and a trip to the iconic Mount Etna. Despite warm conditions at lower altitudes, pupils were surprised to find freezing temperatures and snow at the summit, with conditions dropping to around -12°C. The dramatic contrast served as a powerful reminder of the varied environments associated with volcanic landscapes. Later that day, the group visited the charming town of Taormina, where pupils enjoyed exploring local shops and picking up souvenirs. After a busy day, the group embraced Italian culture by visiting a local pizzeria, where they made their own pizzas - an activity that proved extremely popular. Back at the hotel, the day finished with some light-hearted competition on the nearby beach, with a game of ‘no bounce’ volleyball providing plenty of entertainment for pupils and staff alike.

The trip also included visits to the volcanic islands of Vulcano and Lipari. Pupils hiked across striking volcanic terrain before cooling off with a swim in the sea and, of course, sampling some well-earned gelato. Throughout the trip, pupils were able to deepen their understanding of key geographical concepts. From examining volcanic activity to exploring the formation of unique landforms such as gorges and waterfalls, the experience offered valuable insights into how natural landscapes are shaped. Pupils also considered the challenges of hazard management and how communities live alongside natural risks such as volcanic eruptions.

Aiden Webb reflected by saying: ‘This trip brought our Geography syllabus to life. We saw volcanoes up close, understood how landscapes like gorges, waterfalls and volcanic island are formed and thought about hazard management — how people live with and respond to natural risks such as eruptions.’

The group would like to extend their sincere thanks to Mr Cooper for helping to organise the trip, Miss James for leading it, and Mr Ralph and Mr Canning for their support in making the experience so memorable.
