On Tuesday 17 March, nine Sixth Form pupils from Shiplake College travelled to the University of Cambridge as part of the College’s Oxbridge preparation programme. The visit offered a valuable opportunity to explore one of the world’s leading academic institutions and to deepen their understanding of what it means to study at this level.
Each pupil met individually with an undergraduate reading the subject they are considering at university. These conversations provided clear, first-hand insight into expectations, course structures and the intellectual rigour required to thrive at Cambridge. Pupils were also given practical advice on super-curricular engagement and preparation for the competitive Oxbridge application process.
The group then enjoyed a guided tour of Queens’ College, exploring its historic buildings and learning more about the college system. This was followed by time to visit other colleges independently, allowing pupils to absorb the atmosphere of the university and reflect on their personal aspirations.
For the rowers in the group, a special highlight was a visit to Gonville & Caius College, where they met the Vice President of the Cambridge University Boat Club. She spoke about balancing elite sport with academic excellence and offered a rare tour of the celebrated Caius Library.
Trip Leader and English Teacher Mr Mark Hindley commented “The sun was shining, the people were lovely, and it was great to get an insight into the whole Oxbridge experience. We all came away feeling inspired.”
This visit reflects Shiplake College’s strong commitment to academic excellence and to nurturing pupils who aspire to the highest levels of study. The College’s Sixth Form Futures programme provides a structured and comprehensive framework to support pupils’ ambitions—whether towards Oxbridge, Russell Group universities, apprenticeships or specialist pathways.
For those aiming for Oxford or Cambridge, our Futures programme includes targeted academic enrichment and a bespoke Oxbridge pathway beginning in the spring term. Alongside tailored guidance, pupils take part in visits to both Oxford and Cambridge colleges to help broaden their understanding and prepare them for future applications.
The Cambridge trip has left pupils energised, informed and motivated as they continue their academic journeys. Supported by our dedicated Shiplake Staff and a comprehensive programme of guidance, pupils are equipped to take these next steps with confidence.
