Blue Is The Colour!
Music

The most anticipated House competition – the House Singing Competition – returned last term in what was an incredible event with an electric atmosphere! The entire College gathered in the Sports Hall where everyone supported not just the performers, but from across the College.

The House Singing Competition includes solo, ensemble, and Whole House rounds. Houses had been practising long and hard for the contest, with morning breaks and lunchtimes being used as valuable time to become pitch perfect.

In the leadup to the event, Director of Music, Mr Curran, promised this to be a competition for the ages with some serious competition in the solo and ensemble rounds and a lot of entertainment and house spirit in the final round. The event was hosted by the Deputy Heads of College, Amelie Parker and Monty Walker and with their witty humour and comments, the event was always going to be a lot of fun!

After the rules were set out, the judges were introduced – Mr Howe, Mrs Elliott, and Lead Adjudicator (and pro vocalist) Mrs Auty were the ones who had the responsibility of judging each piece and, going by the quality of the performances, were certainly faced with a colossal task.

Solo Round

The first round of the competition was the Solo Round where there were brilliant individual performances from:

  • A Merritt (Burr) – Wicked Game
  • Sophie Hodges (Everett) – People Help the People
  • R Pathak (Orchard) – Titanium
  • Jack Dag (Skipwith) – Talking to the Moon
  • Noah Scotchbrook (Welsh) – Stars
  • Arabella May (Lower School) – The Fools Who Dream

The winner of this round was Welsh’s Noah Scotchbrook for his powerful singing while Orchard's R Pathak took second place. Such was the quality of the singing in the Solo Round that the judges could not separate the rest of the singers and they were all joint third. Well done to all the performers – it takes a lot of courage to take to the stage in front of the whole College and everyone performed admirably!

Ensemble Round

Next was the Ensemble Round, where small groups of pupils from each House took to the stage:

  • Burr – Somewhere Only We Know
  • Everett – Blame It on the Boogie
  • Orchard – Just the Way You Are
  • Skipwith – Pompeii
  • Welsh – Angels
  • Lower School – Take A Chance on Me

Congratulations to Burr who overcame technical difficulties at the start to put in an outstanding performance to take first place! Skipwith came a strong second place while Welsh House took third.

Whole House Round

The final round of the competition, and perhaps the one most eagerly waited for! Each House in their entirety took to the stage to perform.

  • Burr – Karma Chameleon
  • Everett – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
  • Orchard – Uptown Girl
  • Skipwith – It Must Be Love
  • Welsh – Sweet Caroline
  • Lower School – (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher

Every house performed with great enthusiasm, and it was difficult to choose a winner. First place went to Burr, second went to Everett, and third went to Lower School.

Final Scores

  • 1st – Burr
  • 2nd – Orchard
  • 2nd – Welsh
