A Trip To The Capital
Politics

On Tuesday the 23 April, our Year 12 politics pupils took a trip up to Westminster to visit the Houses of Parliament and the Supreme Court. The following report of the day comes courtesy of Alfie Malcolm, who was one of the pupils on the trip.

‘After arriving at the Houses of Parliament at around 8.50am we began our tour of the houses. We were greeted by our lovely tour guide, and we were taken on a guided tour of parliament where this included a look inside both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It was amazing to learn about how these chambers were constructed and to also learn about their history.

After this, we had some refreshments in the parliament café before we then made our way to watch questions where we saw The Rt Hon Victoria Akins, the current Secretary of State for Health and Social Care answering questions on primary and secondary care within the NHS. We heard from Labour minsters within the Shadow Cabinet and how they challenged and asked questions to the current government which was a great experience to see.

After an exquisite cuisine experience at McDonalds, we then made our way back to the Supreme Court, where we entered to hear the case of Tesco vs Employees on their “fire and rehire” policy were they supposedly illegally fired staff. We heard from Oliver Segal the defence for Tesco and listened to Lord Burrows, a Justice of the Supreme Court.

Following this, we made our way back to the train where we all made it back safely and a huge thanks to Miss Lane and Mr Player for taking us on this trip.'

Speaking after the trip, Teacher of Politics and History Miss Lane added:

‘The trip to London is a fantastic opportunity for the students to be able to see the things they have been studying throughout the year and to also witness it in action.’
